Choosing Mobilegs

When would I need to use Mobilegs crutches?

  • Whenever you are likely to need crutches for longer than a few days.
  • Recovering from an injury or a surgery.
  • For chronic issues with mobility.
  • You are between 4’9” to 6’4” tall, and weigh less than 300lbs.

What different crutches should I consider?

The main types of crutch are underarm crutches, forearm crutches, hands-free knee crutches, and knee scooters. The right choice depends on your injury, balance, weight-bearing instructions, and comfort needs.

Traditional underarm crutches are common, but they can create underarm pressure and hand strain. Forearm crutches require more weight through your hands and arms. Knee scooters may work well for some ankle or foot recoveries, but they are not right for every space, surface, or injury.

Mobilegs are ergonomic underarm crutches designed for adults who want more comfort and adjustability while following their clinician's mobility guidance. For a deeper comparison, start with the option your care team recommends, then compare comfort, fit, surfaces, stairs, and daily use.

Are Mobilegs better than regular crutches?

For many adults comparing traditional crutches vs Mobilegs, Mobilegs can be a more comfortable option than standard underarm crutches. Mobilegs use a flexible saddle, ergonomic handgrips, a contoured frame, and curved rocker feet to help reduce the underarm pressure, hand strain, and awkward movement people often feel with traditional crutches.

If your clinician gave you specific mobility instructions, follow those first. You can also learn more on our Why Mobilegs page.

Are ergonomic crutches worth it?

Ergonomic crutches are usually most worth considering when you expect to use crutches for more than a few days, when regular crutches have caused underarm or hand discomfort, or when comfort and adjustability matter during recovery.

If you only need crutches for a very short time, standard crutches may be enough. Mobilegs are designed as comfortable crutches for adults who want an ergonomic underarm crutch for injury, surgery recovery, or ongoing mobility support.

What are the best crutches for comfort?

The best crutches for comfort depend on your injury, body, balance, and care team's instructions. For adults who need underarm crutches, Mobilegs are designed to improve comfort with a flexible saddle, ergonomic handgrips, curved rocker feet, and adjustable fit.

If you are deciding between standard crutches, forearm crutches, a knee scooter, or Mobilegs, ask your clinician what type of mobility aid is appropriate for your recovery first.

Which Mobilegs crutches should I choose: Ultra or Universal?

Choose Mobilegs Ultra if you want the most premium Mobilegs experience, including the patented suspension saddle, ergonomic handgrips, rocker feet, and style options.

Choose Mobilegs Universal if you want Mobilegs ergonomic comfort at a lower price point. Both are adjustable for adults 4'9" to 6'4" and up to 300 lbs.

Fit, Height, and Weight

How do I adjust my Mobilegs crutches to fit?

  1. Locate left and right-handed Mobilegs
  2. Locate the two sets of squeezable adjustment buttons, at the top and bottom of your Mobilegs.

Set arm length.

  1. Hold onto grip.
  2. Place saddle snug underarm, keeping shoulders relaxed.
  3. Arm comfortably bent at a slight 15-30 degree angle.
  4. Squeezing the buttons on the top of the crutch, adjust the height to fit until there is a half-inch space between your armpit and the saddle.

Set leg length.

Squeezing the buttons on the bottom of the crutch, adjust lower section to 6” in front of toe when leg is straight in standing position

Confirm final fit.

You should be able to put weight on your hands, with a slight 15-30 degree angle in your elbows. The height of the underarm saddle should sit just below your armpit.

Do Mobilegs come as a pair?

Using Mobilegs Safely

Are Mobilegs good for armpit pain?

Mobilegs are designed to reduce underarm pressure compared with a hard, straight underarm bar. The flexible saddle moves with you, so support is not concentrated in one rigid spot.

Do not place your body weight directly into your armpits; most weight should go through your hands. If you have numbness, severe pain, or a medical concern, ask a healthcare professional.

Are Mobilegs good for wrist pain?

Mobilegs use angled ergonomic handgrips to support a more natural wrist position than a flat hand bar. That can make them a better choice for shoppers worried about hand or wrist strain from traditional crutches.

Wrist pain can come from fit, technique, or injury, so make sure your crutches are adjusted correctly and follow your clinician or physical therapist's guidance.

Can I use Mobilegs after knee surgery?

Many people use crutches after surgery or while recovering from knee injuries or procedures, but your surgeon or physical therapist should decide what mobility aid and weight-bearing level are right for you.

Mobilegs can be considered when underarm crutches are appropriate and comfort matters during recovery. Follow your care team's instructions first.

Can I use Mobilegs after foot or ankle surgery?

Many knee, foot, or ankle recovery plans use crutches, knee scooters, or other mobility aids. Mobilegs may be a good fit if your clinician recommends underarm crutches and you want an ergonomic option.

For ankle-specific or non-weight-bearing recovery, ask your care team whether crutches, a knee scooter, or a combination is best for your situation.

Who should ask a doctor or physical therapist before using Mobilegs?

Ask a doctor, surgeon, or physical therapist before using Mobilegs if you are recovering from surgery, have balance concerns, have wrist, shoulder, back, or nerve symptoms, are unsure about weight-bearing limits, or have been told to use a specific mobility aid.

Mobilegs are a mobility aid, not medical advice. Follow your care team's instructions for fit, technique, stairs, surfaces, and how much weight you can place on your injured side.

How do I use Mobilegs?

Walking with Mobilegs crutches requires proper technique and balance to ensure safety and comfort. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to walk with crutches:

1. Adjust your Mobilegs.

Ensure that your Mobilegs are adjusted to your height. The handgrips should be at the level of your hip and the elbow slightly bent when you hold onto them.

2. Stand up.

Position the crutches on either side of your body.

Push yourself up using a stable surface or the assistance of a chair.

3. Hold your Mobilegs correctly.

Hold the handgrips with a firm grip.

Keep your elbows slightly bent for better control.

4. Move your Mobilegs and affected leg together.

Advance both crutches and the affected leg together.

Move the crutches a short distance in front of you, about a step's length.

5. Weight distribution.

Ensure that you do not put weight on the injured or weak leg.

Transfer your weight to the crutches while keeping the injured leg off the ground.

6. Swing through.

Swing the good leg through, landing it slightly ahead of the crutches.

Keep the affected leg elevated to avoid putting weight on it.

7. Repeat.

Repeat the process, advancing the crutches and the good leg while keeping the injured leg off the ground.

8. Take small steps.

Take small, controlled steps to maintain balance and prevent accidents.

9. Practice.

Practice walking with crutches in a safe and open space until you feel comfortable and stable.

Tips.

Always look forward while walking, not down at your feet.

Avoid uneven or slippery surfaces.

If you need to turn, pivot on the good foot while keeping the injured leg off the ground.

If you're unsure about using Mobilegs or have concerns about your mobility, please consult with a healthcare professional or physical therapist for personalized guidance. They can provide specific instructions based on your condition.

How do I sit or stand up using Mobilegs?

Standing up and sitting down with crutches requires careful coordination to maintain balance and prevent strain. Here's a guide for both actions:

Standing up.

  • Position the crutches: Place the crutches on either side of your body, within easy reach.
  • Scoot forward: If you're sitting on a chair or a bed, scoot forward to the edge to create space for movement.
  • Hold the handgrips firmly: Grip the handgrips of the crutches securely with both hands.
  • Push up: Push down on the handgrips and use your arms to lift your body off the seat.
  • Transfer weight to your Mobilegs: Transfer your weight onto your Mobilegs while keeping the affected leg off the ground.
  • Stand up: Push off with your arms and lift your body to a standing position using your Mobilegs for support.

Sitting down.

  • Position your Mobilegs: Stand close to the chair or surface where you plan to sit.
  • Turn around: If needed, turn around so that the back of your legs touch the surface of the chair or bed.
  • Back up: Back up until you feel the chair or bed against the back of your legs.
  • Hold the handgrips: Hold the handgrips of the crutches with a firm grip.
  • Bend at the hips and knees: Bend at the hips and knees while keeping the crutches under your arms for support.
  • Lower yourself: Lower yourself gently onto the chair or bed, using the crutches to control your descent.
  • Adjust position: Adjust your position as needed once you're comfortably seated.

Tips.

  • Take your time and move slowly to maintain stability.
  • If the chair is too low, you may use a higher chair or cushion to make sitting down and standing up easier.
  • Ensure that the crutches are securely placed when standing or sitting.
  • If you have specific mobility concerns or limitations, we recommend that you consult with a healthcare professional or physical therapist for personalized guidance. They can provide tailored instructions based on your condition.
